COMMUNITY | QUT Carseldine Community Conversation

The State Member for Aspley, Tracy Davis, is hosting a facilitated ‘Community Conversation’ to discuss the future of the QUT Carseldine campus. The once busy campus has been vacant for well over 18 months (since January 2009). The Community Conversation is planned for 2-4pm on Sunday 24 October at The Tavernetta (on Dorville Road) in response to concerns about future uses of the idle campus. There has been a lack of consultation on this matter with little or no consideration given to the economic and social impacts of the university’s closure on the local area. The university offered a much needed resource in an area where there is a shortage of social and cultural infrastructure.

As locals, John and Linda have been following the situation with the campus. In her former role on the State Government Community Forum, Linda made several representations to the state government to investigate options for the campus as a matter of urgency, with recommendations that the state government facilitate a range of community, innovation, learning and enterprise uses of the site. Linda met with Tracy to inform her about these past efforts. The Community Conversation will give local residents an opportunity to have their say about the future of the facility. We’ll certainly be participating in Sunday’s conversation and hope other locals will join in. RSVP to aspley@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone 3263 6703.
