PLACE | Street Party in Sandgate

by Linda Carroli

The photograph below captures something I am trying to achieve with the Placed project. John and I just happened to be driving by and stumbled on this street party and go-cart races in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Sandgate. John commented that he hadn’t seen a street party for a number of years and then mused about why the Council didn’t seem to encourage that kind of activity in suburban neighbourhoods.

Placed is about the informal and the formal. It’s about people and communities acting on and in their places and streets to develop all kinds of social, cultural, technological and environmental connections as well as formal and allocated spaces and projects.

Even though some people rode scooters, skateboards and bikes, the go-carts all seemed to be pieced together using recycled and scavenged parts. The whole neighbourhood seemed to be out in force with all age groups playing, gathering and promenading. The street looked unusually occupied and lived in with people having erected makeshift sun shelters and sitting space including temporary swings for kids from some of the grand street trees.
