Culture + Complexity + Change

OUTLOOK | What does sustainability mean to us?

Our approaches to strategy, engagement and planning are attentive to sustainability. We conceptualise sustainability as a long term outlook across the following realms:

  • Governance
  • Technology
  • Environment
  • Economics
  • Society
  • Culture

That is, taking a cue from the Sustainable Cities Network, sustainability “enhances the economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being of current and future generations”. However, there is a need to be mindful, as Tony Fry proposes, of ‘sustaining unsustainability’.

These ‘pillars’ of sustainability are ordinarily represented as a venn diagram comprised of overlapping circles. However, it is more complex than that. There is a further dimension in that embedded with each of the realms is the whole sustainability framework. That is, these elements are equally intrinsic and extrinsic to each other. This means our work is inherently integrated and systems oriented in a way that is intended to enhance strategic planning coherence. Our methodologies are founded on an iterative approach rather than a linear planning approach.

Common and prevailing practices, such as forecasting and linear planning, tend to assume that the world does not change and that what is true now will continue to be so. We will continue to extrapolate this framework and post further thoughts to the blog.
